Continuing with our series, Des Moines Picture of the Week, this week’s picture comes from Tina Johnson and was taken recently from the 25th floor of the Plaza Tower.

Tina says “I just love stepping out into my backyard (i.e. all of downtown) and taking in the amazing beauty we have downtown. There is always something new, or at least you can see if from a new perspective. This photo of the clock tower atop of the Polk County Courthouse is just one example. I’ve photographed it many times before, but was especially pleased with the detail I could get from the Plaza Tower’s 25th floor.”

“Des Moines has so many things going on all the time that there are many opportunities to capture some nice pictures. The Dragon Boat Races at Gray’s Lake is an example. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and this picture does not show it there were many, many participants in the races. Keep your eyes open for the variety of events going on in Des Moines.”

The canyon of edifices reflects the psyche of Des Moines – comfortable and inviting, malleable and forward looking, yet rooted in tradition. From the bustle of the workday, to the entertaining Court Ave nightlife, to the family-oriented superb Farmer’s Market, I always find unique opportunities to document on my visits.”

Des Moines Picture of the Week

Continuing with our series, Des Moines Picture of the Week, this week’s picture is one of my very own. I took this of the Davis-Brown Tower last year and entered it into the 70th Annual Iowa State Fair Photography competition.

DSM 5x7 davis brown

This was the first year I had ever entered the competition, and had always wanted to before, so I entered four photos. The first one of the Davis-Brown Tower won 3rd place in the Iowa Architecture Division. I also had another one, the photo below shown, it was entered into the Anything Goes! division. This year’s state fair reported a record breaking 4,577 entries, as you can see Iowan’s love photography and why not, we have such a beautiful city and state to photograph.
