Skywalk Signage
I know I’m not the first to express this, but it is inconceivable to me that Wells Fargo Arena does not even exist on the current skywalk signage or directories. The facility has been open for over 3 and a half years and if an out-of-towner looks at the signs to find the arena-well it just doesn’t exist.
I swear, if I wouldn’t get arrested for defacing public property (could I call it art?), I’m going to take a label maker down there and just start adding Wells Fargo Arena to all the directories and over-head signs!
Actually I’m trying to find out when and where the next meeting of the “Des Moines SkywalkCommittee” is to be held and hope to attend. I know the skywalks are a unique combination of public and private interests but the public sector hasn’t accomplished anything on this in way to long a time.

Larry – As I understand it the Downtown Community Alliance is working to update those signs with interactive LED options that would allow them the option to change them much easier should the need arise. Also, I believe the option they are considering would alow them to focus on one location that may be having a large gathering over the weekend…

This is suppose to be a skywalk sysytem, not a maze where someone can get lost easily. The skywalks need to be taken seriously just like a normal city street. Here we go with the “image” thing again. People need directions. We don’t want visitors going back home and talking about a big revolving door that they got caught up in. Des Moines needs to learn how to multitask. It needs to pick up the pace. We need to market our attractions quickly and efficiently. The Center Street Pedestrian Bridge will be done in three months. We don’t need to wait until 2012 to promote it or have it’s image appear on city web sites.

Hank you are right on!
Pete, I hope the DCA works on this sooner than later. LED options sound like a cool idea!. It would also be great if they could make some interactive stations along the route on best options to get from Point A to Point B since sometimes it’s hard to find a door unlocked to get out of the skywalk once you are up there in it after 7pm.
Also how about an iPhone app DCA?
