Des Moines Downtown Neighborhoods: Western Gateway
Continuing our series on Des Moines Downtown Neighborhoods, today we will take a look at the Western Gateway Neighborhood. Des Moines is currently made up of to six diverse and distinctive urban neighborhoods. Each of the neighborhood’s rough boundaries appear on this map below.
Western Gateway Neighborhood
Located on the west side of Downtown Des Moines, the Western Gateway Neighborhood begins at 10th Street & extends west to 17th street, and south to Cherry Street and Mulberry Street, and north to Ingersoll Avenue and High Street.
This neighborhood is currently experiencing a tremendous amount of urban development and neighborhood rebirth, with the center of it all being an outdoor world-class sculpture garden. The neighborhood is composed of both new modern architecture as well as restored historical buildings.
Anchoring the western end of the neighborhood is the headquarter campus for Meredith Corporation. To the east of the Meredith campus is the Western Gateway Park & Sculpture Garden which is sandwiched between Meredith, the John and Mary Pappajohn Higher Education Center to the east, the new Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield headquarters that is currently under construction to the north, and the Allied Insurance headquarters to the south.
This neighborhood as been host to some of the most popular outdoor events in Des Moines, such as the Obama Rally, the Des Moines Art Festival and the 80-35 Music Festival.
