Finding a Taxi Cab in Downtown Des Moines

One thing I’ve noticed here in Des Moines is the lack of taxi cabs. You would think that you would see them lined up outside of bars on Friday or Saturday night like in other cities I’ve lived in, and forget trying to find one at Des Moines International past midnight, for those late flight arrivals. Right now, the City of Des Moines only allows two taxi cab companies to pick up and drop off customers in Des Moines. Both companies, Yellow and Capitol Cabs, are owned by TransIowa, Inc.  In these economic times, you think it would be more cost effective to have just one brand instead of two, but that’s a whole other post.

In an effort to bring in new business, the city of Des Moines is moving ahead with plans to change its regulations for taxi cabs companies. The city is considering lowering insurance requirements, reducing the minimum number of cabs from eight to five, and only requiring a company to have six drivers, instead of ten. More taxi cabs on our streets will increase the convenience for downtown visitors and workers, and help add to the urban feel of a larger city.

Larry I couldnt agree more. I can’t believe Des Moines has such a pathetic cab service with the revitalization downtown and all the people that commute down there on the weekends, most to frequent a bar or night life establishment.

Maybe Des Moines could get a new taxi company and set them selves apart by using all electric taxis or at least hybrids as a company is doing in London.

They could advertise themselves as the Des Moines Green Taxi Cab Company, green as opposed to Yellow Cab. :)
