Continuing our series on Des Moines Downtown Neighborhoods, today we will take a look at the Court Avenue Neighborhood. Des Moines is currently made up of to six diverse and distinctive urban neighborhoods. Each of the neighborhood’s rough boundaries appear on this map below.

Court Avenue Neighborhood

Located on the eastern side of Downtown Des Moines, the Court Avenue Neighborhood begins at 6th Avenue & Court Avenue at the Polk County Court House and extends east to the river banks, and south to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway, and north to Mulberry Street.

The Court Avenue Neighborhood is one of Des Moines’ oldest downtown neighborhoods. This neighborhood or area dates back to 1846. This area being in the heart of downtown was home to many of Des Moines’ firsts – the first 2-story house, public school, post office, bank and bridge across the Des Moines River at Court Avenue. Today the neighborhood is composed of numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs in what were former historic office buildings. New housing has recently been created in both older buildings as well as new buildings.

Walking around Court Avenue, you will see period street lamps, planters and park benches that dot the sidewalks up and down the street, making it an attractive and pedestrian-friendly setting. This neighborhood is host to the Downtown Farmers Market. The Downtown Farmers Market is one of the countries’ largest and entices throngs of weekend shoppers, street entertainers and musicians every weekend from May through October.

This neighborhood also is home to the multi-million dollar Science Center of Iowa on 4th Street and is bordered by Principal Riverwalk.
