Blogging About Des Moines Is Growing in Popularity

Another new blog about Des Moines started recently. Pete Jones has created Des Moines is not Boring at www.desmoinesisnotboring.com. According to Pete’s site:

As a kid growing up in Des Moines, I was the one who commonly said “Des Moines is Boring” or “there is nothing to do in this city.” I always thought the big cities had so much more to offer and this little city in hickville Iowa was so lame. Those thoughts continued through High School, College, and even during the beginning of my professional life. Then, as if I were hit by a truck and given some sense, I started to read about new and innovative things going on in this great City. After some internal counseling, I realized I had no idea what the city had to offer because I had failed to look. I took this new found revelation and used it as motivation to start looking for new and cool things to do. I joined a community group and developed a passion for the city and really enjoy living here. So, as a result of my epiphany, I get sick to my stomach when I hear people say Des Moines is Boring, cause it is not!!! All it takes is a little motivation to look outside the door of your corner pub to see there are a ton of entertaining things to do in Des Moines, and I am going to prove it. Pete Jones

I’ve always heard the same from my friends who have yet to make it to Des Moines. Why would you want to live in the midwest, especially after spending most of your adult life in Florida. I always answer because this is where I work and Des Moines is pretty good, you just have to come experience it for yourself.

Please stop by Pete’s site and take a look at the wonderful work he is doing!

Social Networking for Des Moines

With the popularity of social networking these days, and as a member of MySpace and Facebook, I thought I would see what I could find about the city of Des Moines. I started with logging on to MySpace and doing a friend search for Des Moines, up pops a Des Moines page with as of this writing 5,164 friends, soon to be 5,165 as I’m requesting to be added as a friend. Looking around on the Des Moines page, I wasn’t able to tell who was maintaining it, but it appeared to be a really tall (8 foot 11 inches) 102 year-old, single, Sagittarius.

Next, I tried FaceBook but wasn’t having any luck finding just a Des Moines page, but did find numerous Des Moines businesses and residents listed. If anyone happens to find the page for the City, let me know.

I’m also working on figuring out how to get 50309 tweets displayed on the site. It’s taking some time to figure out how to do it, with my coding skills being very limited. If you are not familiar with what a “tweet” is, allow me to explain. Tweets come from Twitter. Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (otherwise known as tweets) which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.
